I am so very pleased that you are about to embark on publication of your book. It is such a thorough, personal and exquisitely detailed biography, which manages to capture the essence of the time and the emotion of the occasions. Cathy, your prose is so magical, your attention to detail tightly configured, and your memory of so many events – so much of which involves sadness and tragedy – impressive. Your book is like a long, finely crafted love story. But what I found so enlightening about this book – and something which I had not anticipated in our few conversations – was that it is about your entire family; the history, the detail, the lineage. It is also about you; as much about you as anyone else, which is why The Silent-footed Butler is an autobiography as well as a biography. What I can confirm for you is that this book works; it holds personal treasures, which is the story of a family; it demonstrates what it is to live and grow under circumstances that are not ideal – but not uncommon – without that being the raison d’être of the story. So I thank you once again for allowing me to have access to this remarkable work; I look forward to its publication and will be buying a copy as soon as I can.
